The University of Pikeville – Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO) student, Maivys Hernandez, began to grow her passion for optometry during her undergraduate years at Florida International University.
Hernandez was intrigued by being a part of the inaugural class of 2020 and admired the extended scope of practice of bringing a “Vision of Hope” to Eastern Kentucky, that she chose to pursue her graduate studies at KYCO.
Hernandez faced the challenge of being away from family during graduate school but is thankful she had her husband by her side while she was working towards her goal of becoming an optometrist.
“Being able to do what I like most and working toward my goal is what keeps me going every day,” said Hernandez. “Time goes by fast because you are always so busy.”
Upon graduation, Hernandez plans to practice in Kentucky, where she can perform laser and peri-ocular surgical procedures that optometrists are not permitted to perform in the majority of states around the U.S.
“There is so much that we can do as doctors of optometry from diagnosing, treating and managing diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, that can affect the eyes, to providing glasses prescriptions, contact lenses and specialty contact lenses,” said Hernandez. “I strongly believe that working in connection with other specialists to give the patient the best care we can offer is the key to having a successful career.”
Hernandez is most excited to use her ability to listen and develop relationships with her patients during her practice and is confident in her knowledge and that of her peers, to be the best optometrists they can be for the sake of their patients.
“I have learned that if you want your patient to listen to you and become well educated about their condition, you as a doctor have to listen to them first,” said Hernandez. “Treating my patients as a family member will be my golden rule for practicing optometry.”
