The Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO), in partnership with leading eyewear company Zenni Optical, recently awarded first-year optometry student Grace Skarohlid with the Zenni Eyecare Access Scholarship. The $2,500 annual scholarship is awarded to an incoming optometry student dedicated to providing eye care to an underserved community after graduation.
Zenni partners with optometry schools to establish the Zenni Eye Care Access Scholarship to further both organizations’ commitment to improving eye health in vulnerable communities. A scholarship of this nature assists KYCO students in their desire to provide eye care for all and supports efforts to make eye care accessible to patients in need.
Assistant Dean and Professor of Optometry Josephine Ibironke, O.D., M.P.H., FAAO, specified that the mission at KYCO is to develop leaders committed to caring for the underserved.
“In Grace’s essay, titled, ‘How I Plan to Serve the Underserved,’ she describes how she cares for people in our community,” said Ibironke. “This scholarship is befitting because she already understands the importance of this commitment.”
Skarohlid is pursuing her dreams of becoming an optometrist and chose to attend KYCO because it felt like home. In addition, she was attracted by the top-of-the-line virtual reality, 3D anatomy labs, and laser courses offered at KYCO.
“KYCO is so much more than the equipment they provide. The professors and doctors look out for the success of each one of their students the same way Zenni Optical continues to help first-year students achieve their dreams,” said Skarohlid. “I am so grateful to receive this scholarship. One day, as an optometrist, I hope to continue serving the underserved within the optometry world and my community.”
