UPIKE to Host Pikeville Fire and Police Departments to Conduct Training

The University of Pikeville (UPIKE) will host the Pikeville Fire Department and Pikeville Police Department as they conduct specialized training sessions on campus December 16-20. The training will take place as part of a collaborative effort between the City of Pikeville and UPIKE, aimed at enhancing safety and preparedness for the community.

The training sessions will be held inside the Gillespie Building, which is scheduled for demolition in early 2025 to make way for UPIKE’s new Tanner College of Dental Medicine. While these events may produce loud noises and simulated commotion, they are essential for maintaining the readiness of both the fire and police departments in protecting the community.

City of Pikeville Commissioner of Public Safety Phillip Reed is working closely with UPIKE to organize this important event, which will also include collaboration with UPIKE Public Safety personnel.

“We’re so thankful for the opportunity to help support our community by making this space available for Pikeville Fire and Police Department training,” said UPIKE Chief of Public Safety Lee Upchurch.

The training will begin on Monday, December 16, with the Pikeville Police Department focusing on building search and active shooter training using simulated rounds, not live ammunition. Please note that the training will be conducted in a controlled environment with no live gunfire.

The remainder of the week will feature the Pikeville Fire Department’s training, focusing on search and rescue operations and door-breaching techniques. A fog machine may be used to simulate smoke, but no live fire will be involved.
