KYCO student awarded the Changing Lives Scholarship

Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO) student Robert Harkleroad has been awarded the David and Jeanne Keith Changing Lives Scholarship, valued at $1,000, by David Keith, founder of David Keith Ophthalmic. This prestigious scholarship recognizes Harkleroad’s dedication to optometry and his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others through vision care.

Harkleroad, a first-year student at KYCO, expressed deep gratitude for the scholarship, emphasizing how it will support his journey in optometric education. Originally from Apollo, Pennsylvania, Harkleroad is a first-generation college student who earned his bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences from the Commonwealth University–Lock Haven.

“I am incredibly thankful that you are supporting me in being a part of this school,” said Harkleroad. “Proper eye care, especially vision therapy, can vastly improve the lives and futures of those that receive it. Your generosity in providing this scholarship will help me continue my education and pursue my passion for optometry.”

For over two decades, Keith has been committed to advancing eye care by providing cutting-edge technology to eye care professionals in Florida. Through the Changing Lives Scholarship, he continues his mission to elevate optometric education and support aspiring optometrists.

“We are honored to support students like Robert Harkleroad, who exemplify dedication and passion for the field of optometry,” said Keith. “His commitment to making a difference in the lives of others through eye care aligns perfectly with our mission.”

Harkleroad chose KYCO after visiting multiple optometry schools, ultimately finding his home at the University of Pikeville. He believes that the strong community, breathtaking Appalachian surroundings and emphasis on patient care will prepare him to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in Eastern Kentucky.
