The University of Pikeville was recently recognized by The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) in the release of never before published data focusing on learning from institutional pass rates on elementary content teacher licensure tests.
The publication of this data moves the field of teacher preparation more in line with a practice commonly observed in other professional preparation, such as nursing, law, and accounting, where “first-time pass rates” are routinely reported as key evidence of the quality of programs’ preparation.
Exploring pass rate data through many different lenses helps identify successful institutions that get the most teacher candidates across the finish line. In Kentucky, only 46% of test-takers pass the elementary licensure test on their first attempt, but this average masks significant variation among institutions.
UPIKE stood out for supporting its test-takers in passing licensing tests throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky when viewed through these different lenses.
UPIKE has more Pell grant recipients (44%) than average (35%) and exceeds the state’s first-attempt average pass rate. The university average first-attempt pass rate on the Praxis II Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001) test is 56% compared with 46% across the state.
The quality of the teacher workforce is critical in the early grades, when teachers bear an extraordinary responsibility, building a solid foundation for students in both the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in later grades and their future lives.
Director of Teacher Education Coletta Parsley, Ed.D., explains UPIKE has a quality teacher education program that relies on student and program data to drive continuous improvement efforts.
“We are pleased to be recognized as a stand-out institution, in addition to other institutions in Kentucky, based on our first-attempt pass rates on the Praxis II Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects Test,” said Parsley. “Our students work hard to meet the required criteria, and our faculty and staff are here to support them throughout the program.”
