Welcome to the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO)!

We’re excited to have you consider joining us here at KYCO, nestled in the beautiful Central Appalachian Mountains in Southeastern Kentucky. As the only college of optometry in the state, we take pride in offering something truly special. In fact, we’re one of only three colleges in states with expanded therapeutic practices, which we fully embrace. Our curriculum ensures that you’ll get hands-on experience with advanced procedures like in-office laser eye treatments, medication injections, and minor surgical techniques — all while using state-of-the-art equipment in a modern, innovative environment.

Our clinical teaching lanes are equipped with digital imaging systems, so you’ll be able to record your slit-lamp exams and review them later to sharpen your skills. Plus, our clinical labs feature virtual exam lanes that project interactions, refraction processes, and slit-lamp findings, allowing everyone to see these techniques in real-time. We’ve designed our classrooms in the round, so it’s easy to engage with both your instructors and fellow students in a collaborative setting. And you won’t need to worry about paper — we provide every student with an iPad, making it easier for you to stay organized and study anywhere, anytime.

One thing we’re especially proud of is our commitment to the Appalachian community. This region has some of the highest rates of eye disease and low vision with limited access to care, and through our clinics and outreach programs, you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference. Our students play an active role in providing quality eye care to underserved areas in Appalachia and rural Kentucky. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings, from primary care to specialties like pediatrics, geriatrics, vision rehabilitation, specialty contact lenses, and expanded therapeutics. Many of our patients rely on us, as we provide care they might otherwise have to travel hours to receive.

At KYCO, our faculty and staff truly care about you — not just as a student, but as a person. We’re here to support your academic journey, as well as your mental, physical, and social well-being. Our entire team is dedicated to helping you become a highly skilled and knowledgeable optometric physician. We’ll challenge and guide you as you prepare to take the lead in the future of optometry.

We can’t wait to welcome you and be part of your journey toward becoming a Doctor of Optometry in today’s healthcare landscape!
