University of Pikeville Launches Innovative Clinic to Expand Healthcare Access in Local Community

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – University of Pikeville (UPIKE) Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM) is proud to announce the grand opening of the BEAR Healthcare Clinic, an interdisciplinary free student-run clinic aimed at enhancing medical services for the residents of Eastern Kentucky, on August 10, between 12 to 4 p.m.

The clinic is conveniently located at 8015 Millard Hwy., Pikeville, and will be open on the second Saturday of each month. It will offer a wide range of specialized medical services designed to meet the diverse needs of patients from social work, preventative care, and routine check-ups to vaccinations, kids sports physicals, behavioral health sessions, and osteopathic treatment for chronic back, muscle, and joint pain therapy. The team of medical students and dedicated healthcare professionals are prepared to deliver compassionate care and personalized attention to every individual.

With the generous support of the American Medical Association (AMA), KYCOM’s AMA Chapter received significant funding that bolstered the efforts to improve community outreach and healthcare education.

KYCOM AMA President and second-year medical student Haven Jacob-Wheatley and AMA Clinical Director and second-year medical student Elshaday Sendek have been working tirelessly with the AMA executive board to propel the vision into what now stands as the BEAR Healthcare Clinic.

“Thanks to KYCOM’s AMA chapter founders, our team was granted the opportunity to make our vision a reality by creating a free healthcare resource for the community and educating the public on the importance of preventative care,” said Jacob-Wheatley.

Sendek is thrilled to be a part of accomplishing this community-serving endeavor.

“I’m so grateful to be a part of an organization working to advance healthcare excellence and improve outcomes for patients across Eastern Kentucky,” said Sendek. “We extend our sincere gratitude for the AMA’s confidence in our chapter’s mission and their investment in our future.”

The opening of the BEAR Healthcare Clinic reinforces UPIKE’s role as a leader in healthcare innovation and community service. By combining academic excellence with practical, patientcentered care, UPIKE aims to set a new standard in healthcare delivery in Appalachia.

“At UPIKE, we recognize the importance of accessible healthcare services in fostering a healthy community,” said Dean at KYCOM, Joe Kingery, D.O. “The BEAR Healthcare Clinic represents our dedication to expanding healthcare access and improving the well-being of those we serve.”
