For the University of Pikeville, connecting with alumni and friends could involve flying or driving hundreds of miles, but sometimes it means a quick trip to Whitesburg, Ky. In February, UPIKE hosted an intimate gathering over lunch at Pine Mountain Grill.
Before lunch, attendees were able to catch up with one another, form new bonds and reconnect with their alma mater’s current happenings.
Tiffany Craft was one of many Letcher County natives in attendance. Craft, a UPIKE Alumni Association board member, enjoyed the opportunity to fellowship with friends who feel more like family.
“One of the many great qualities of UPIKE is the family atmosphere,” said Craft. “You feel right at home with people you are meeting for the very first time. I love attending these events in order to get to know more of the extended UPIKE family. I had a wonderful time with these friends God has blessed me with.”
After enjoying a meal of classic southern favorites, UPIKE Chancellor and former Kentucky Governor Paul E. Patton addressed the teachers, parents, community members and professionals in attendance. Patton talked of the university’s growth and the unique environment found at UPIKE.
“We all know high school students who are just beginning to make plans for their future,” said Patton. “Some students are meant to go to other schools for their education, but there are some students who are meant to attend UPIKE and we look to you to help us connect with those students.”
Patton also talked to the group about the opportunities that await students at the university within two of its health professions programs – Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine and Kentucky College of Optometry.
Luncheons and many other events throughout the year provide a valuable opportunity for UPIKE graduates and regional leaders to make professional connections.
Attendees like Whitney Hogg (PC ’11) say these events provide a small sample of the fond memories from her time spent at the university.
“Building long-lasting relationships with my professors, faculty and friends is one of the highlights of my four years at Pikeville College,” said Hogg. “I always look forward to this luncheon for the opportunity to catch up with fellow alumni and hear about all the great things going on at UPIKE.”
